Sustainability
Sustainability is a business model that seeks to ensure the prosperity of business, improve the quality of life, and promote ecosystemic health. Sustainability seeks to value all forms of capital, not just financial. While often difficult to quantify, human and natural capital are the basis of our global economic system and must be valued as such if we are to continue our current level of prosperity.
Some companies are interested only in compliance, typically falling short on environmental laws and incurring penalties and damage to their reputation. These companies will use end-of-pipe initiatives to minimize their environmental impact in order to avoid fines.
A more sustainable company, on the other hand, will combat inefficiency in the use of human, natural, and financial capital at its source, thereby saving money, eliminating risk, improving their reputation among stakeholders, as well as improving their ability to react to new resource-related market obstacles.
For companies that already had an environmental management system or corporate social responsibility program in place, the RoHS and WEEE directives did not present much of a problem and resulted in a significant market advantage.
